Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony MZNH600D Hi-MD MiniDisc Walkman

Customer Review: Great Hi-MD Player!
Summary: 5 Stars

I thought it was finally time to replace my Irock 520 32MB mp3 player. I looked around, but I couldn't find anything that really suited it, especially in my price range of under 90 bucks. So I talked to one of my friends and he recommended a MiniDisc Player. So I looked them up and I was impressed. I ordered the MZNH600D after getting some advice from these forums and I am blown away by it. Long battery life, GREAT sound quality (at 48kbps!), unlimited storage, sleek and small design, and very easy to use controls. I love the jog dial wheel, makes it very easy to flip through large numbers of songs. Anyone who has a large library of songs to flip through will quickly grow to love this jog wheel. I currently have 230 songs on the 1GB disc it came with, I still have 663MB left. And you can hold a total of 675 songs per 1GB disc, and for 6 bucks a pop, thats an awesome deal, unlimited storage! I bought a five pack of regular discs instead though for only $6.25 ($1.05 a disc). Each disc holds 300MB, about 200 songs. Dispite what I have heard about ATRAC, I love it. ATRAC3plus sounds fantastic, even at 48kbps, which is the minumum rate and I use it. The software (sonicstage 2.0) is very easy and simple to use. The LCD is great, you see everything you need and the song/artist name scroll across the screen so you can see all of it, its only missing a backlight but I can live without that. I couldn't be happier. And best of all this thing was only 80 bucks, and with ipods as much as 300 bucks, this is a steal. I am now a diehard Sony Minidisc fan and I will always recommend them to others.

Customer Review: It all works great for me!
Summary: 5 Stars

I Love this thing. The battery life is great. I used it at work for around six hours. Then I took it on a trip and listened to it for another 15 hours on the same rechargeable battery and it still had playing time left.

With the 1 gig minidisc I have 345 songs on my minidisk and still have 242.7mb free with the tracks recorded in HI-LP(ATRAC3plus 64kps).

To me the great thing about a minidisc player is I can just change the disc and I have another gig of music ready to go so it is very versatile and cheaper than an MP3 player. Plus to be honest a gig of music in HI-LP (ATRAC3) suits my needs just fine.

At first I did not like the idea of using a proprietary format like ATRAC but it works great and since the software is free and I plan on using an XP pc for sometime to come I did not think it was much of a risk especially since I could always put regular mp3 formatted songs on the minidisc if I want.

I also like the fact that my XP pro OS will pickup the walkman as an external storage device if the SonicStage software is not turned on. That was a nice feature.

I am using Sonicstage v2.0 and it has worked great on my XP pro (sp2) machine. The MD Simple Burner has worked flawlessly for me also.I have written, erased and rewritten songs to my HI-MD minidisc with no problem with this software. As for the minidiscs I have had no trouble finding the HI-MD minidisks or the 80min minidisc.

Bottom line for the money I don't think you can beat this player.

Customer Review: Excellent player!! just some minuses...
Summary: 5 Stars

This player is really amazing... i really recomend it!

PROS:
*The sound quality at 64kbps is excellent... I can't tell the difference between atrac3plus at 64kbps and MP3 at 128Kbps.
*I was able to store 36 CD's on one minidisc and 38 on the other one...
*Software isn't really a problem as other reviews have said. I recommend that you download the 3.2 version from the internet.
*Small enough to fit in your pocket!
*Battery life is very good.

CONS:
*The wheel is somewhat hard to move! (Don't expect it to move like the ipod's one)
*The screen is not backlit so it's really hard to see it at night.
*Takes about 15 minutes to copy each CD into the player (Note that I'm using an USB 1.1 instead of a USB 2.0 which is faster)
*The headphones are not the best... but you can better ones for 15$
*You will need to use the custom EQ to set your best desired sound since the standard setting is really bad...

Buy this player unless you have enough money to buy an ipod! If you can buy 1 or 2 blank minidisc extra (you can fit about 35 CD's on each one at 64kbps).

Customer Review: Simply the best way of carrying music
Summary: 5 Stars

Ipods are cool and have a lot of capacity, but expensive and the battery doesn't last much.
Solid-state players are cool, but storage is bloody expensive, and battery doesn't last much either.
CD/MP3 players are cheap but bulky, do not double as portable storage and you need a burner.
PDAs are convenient because you only carry one thing, but have expensive storage and short battery life.

This little thing can store 35 CDs with pretty good quality on 1 minidisc, will run over 25 hours on just 1 humble regular AA battery; I use rechargeables which last even longer. It is great as portable storage and backup tool since you can have several discs. I am in Toronto and buy them at the Sony shop in Yorkdale mall, but you can also get them from Futureshop or Sonystyle.ca.

Sound is very good, probably like a 128 Kbps MP3. It has a 5-band customizable equalizer.

Only cons: I installed Sonicstage on 3 PCs: it refuses to work on one of them, other than that it's ok. Also, you can't copy back music from a minidisc to a different PC.

My advice: go get it.

Customer Review: very good sony!
Summary: 5 Stars

i bought this player a few days ago and it is awesome. i curently already had sonic stage 2.0 version on my computer and over 3,000 songs in my library. all i had to do is install the new software so that my hi md player would be recognized by the 2.0 software. it was very simple to do. then i just started transfering all the music that i wanted onto the 1gb mini disc. i did not finish cuz the storage is enormous. so then i just went on and played the song that were in it already. you can always go back and transfer more if you want to or try to fill the disc in one day if you have the time. the only thing is where do i go to buy more blank 1gb minidiscs? sony.com has them for $6.99 a piece but they do not ship to p.o. boxes. so for now i can use the 80 min minidiscs which can store 13.5 hours of music which is incredible cuz the other minidiscs players can only hold 5 hours and the sound is not as good as the hi-md player is a lot better. if you are looking for something not too expensive and do not want to be limited to memory card players or skipping hard drive players, go with this sony. you wont regret it!
