Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony NPFM500H Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery Pack for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Cameras (Retail Packaging)

Customer Review: Better than the erratic third-party options
Summary: 5 Stars

These batteries will perform the same as the one that came with your camera. I've bought several of these and several third-party aftermarket offerings and learned some things the hard way.

I've found the performance of the third-party batteries to be spotty at best. First, you have to charge and discharge many of them several times before they will do anything consistently, and many include instructions to that effect in the fine print. I bought two from the same aftermarket source that behaved totally differently. One settled in and would charge up to around 90 percent, according to my Alpha 550. The other would never reach that level. In addition, the problem battery's characteristics completely confounded my AG-V0900 charger, causing it to generate false messages on the battery's condition and sometimes refuse to charge at all. I've concluded that the cheaper batteries are false economy, and I will stick with the Sony brand Infolithiums in the future. Be aware also that some third-party battery producers mark their batteries with the Infolithium name. Are they the OEM for Sony, or are they violating the trademark? I think they are just one more risky choice. Read the listings and ad copy carefully before you buy.

If you're taking your camera to a remote spot or going on vacation in a foreign country, my advice is to not take any chances. Does it make sense to risk shutting down hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of equipment to save $20 or so? Go with the real deal: pay your money and get the Sony brand. At the time of this review, Amazon's price was as good or better than any other source.

Good shooting,
Tim

Customer Review: A must have for Alpha users
Summary: 5 Stars

This battery will work on A200,A300,A350 and A700. A second battery is a must for those who covering events and traveling. One full charge can easily last for more than 300+ shots with frequent checking on photos at LCD. I took this as a backup battery when I travel. I seldom use flash, so I guess the battery will finish up faster if more flashing is used. One big advantage of having secondary battery is that you are dare to use all of the electric charge in the battery until the last bit because you knew there is a fully charged battery as spare.

For an example, you ask yourself, "Do I need to charge my battery?", when you plan to go out with your camera with 40% left of your battery. If you don't charge, you may miss a moment because your battery is dried. If you charge, you have a fully charged battery but you wasted your battery lifetime and charge cycle, because you will charge more often. You are not utilizing the battery charge until it is 0%.

A big recommend to all Alpha users who frequently travel and cover an event.

Customer Review: Long-lasting
Summary: 5 Stars

When I bought my Sony Alpha 350, I had no idea how long the battery would last, so I ordered this one. No one wants the battery to give out before the fun ends. So far, I never have had an even where the second battery was required, so I make sure I switch batteries to make them each last about the same length of time before I will have to replace them. This weekend, I plan to try some night photos to see if the the batteries can be worn down. I doubt it, so I am very pleased with the stamina of this battery. One more reason I'm glad I bought a Sony dSLR instead of another major brand. Sony Alpha DSLRA350 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Super SteadyShot Image Stabilization (Body Only)

Customer Review: You can't beat the original
Summary: 5 Stars

I've tried several different "third party" batteries for my Sony Alpha's, but they do not compare to the original Sony product. It may seem tempting when you can get a 2-pack for $20, but you're wasting $20! The others will sometimes get hot and almost always have fewer shots in them even after 20+ hours on the charging block. I recently popped in a non-Sony battery, it showed 100% charge, 13 shots later "Battery Exhausted" and the camera shut down... during a wedding! With these puppies from Sony, I'm getting a minimum of 700 shots (RAW + JPEG) and zero issues with heat (even in this South Florida Sun). I'll pay a few extra bucks for the Sony's from now on.

Customer Review: Best battery pack I ever had
Summary: 5 Stars

Some weeks ago I bought a Sony Alpha 200 DSLR. It came with the NP-FM500H battery pack. Although it's always a bit tricky some cameras work only with their own make of batteries which are pretty expensive, I find this Sony NP-FM500H battery pack is the best I ever have used so far.

It's not so important to know how much juice there's left by an exact percentage (it's useful though!) but it's better to know there's sufficient power to take far more than 400 exposures. I once could take 453 pictures. So I think the NP-FM500H battery pack isn't too expensive. And if you go on a DSLR I think a reliable battery life is most important.
