Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony RM-VL600 8-Device Universal Learning RemoteCustomer Review: Powerful universal remote that is not overly complex Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this remote to replace my old One-4-All remote that wouldn't control my new Sony receiver. The Sony remote has a wide array of predefined components, and was easy to set up to control my Sony TV, Sony VCR, Sony Receiver, Sony CD player, Motorola Cable box, and Panasonic DVD player. I am very impressed with the ease of programming and the button layout. The remote has sufficient extra buttons for programming additional features for each mode, but doesn't have too many buttons to overwhelm you. As other reviews have stated, it's very easy to program this remote, and any button can be programmed to perform an alternate function, provided you have the original remote to transmit the IR code for the desired function. Since I pipe the sound for my various components through my Sony Receiver, I especially liked the feature that allows you to program the remote to send a code to the Receiver whenever a new function is chosen (e.g., choose CD on the remote, and the CD codes are activated, plus it sends a command to the Receiver to switch the audio input to CD). I expect the battery life will be quite good since the remote does not contain any LEDs or displays -- features I don't need. All-in-all, I've only had this remote for 1 day, but it has quickly become easy to use and promises to be an effective replacement for my various remotes.
Customer Review: Great remote - worked with all five devices Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a 9 year old Yamaha receiver to use with a home theater system. I got a great price on ebay, but it did not come with a remote. The Yamaha remote for this receiver can be purchased, but it costs $77, plus S&H. I wanted to find a more affordable universal remote that not only would work for this Yamaha receiver, but would work with all of my other devices (cable box, TV, VCR, DVD) and also have a guide feature for Time Warner Digital Cable, so I would not have to use two remote controls all the time. Well, this Sony RM-VL600 did the trick. Not only can I use the remote with all my devices and use it for the cable guide as well, but it has a 4 programming buttons that are really neat. You can program whatever sequence of devices and actions you would like to run, save the macro, and then just hit the button and it follows that command. I wanted to be able to turn the TV and Cable box on and off at the same time with one click, mostly for my wife, and so I programmed this in, and it worked like a charm. I had a universal remote with my Time Warner digital cable, but not only did it not work with my Yamaha receiver, but it did not work with my Magnavox DVD. This Sony remote is also more comfortable in your hand and more user friendly than the Time Warner universal remote. FYI, I purchased this remote for $[..] in 10/09.
Customer Review: Unbelievable value for the money Summary: 5 Stars
After a Christmas of buying all new A/V components, I decided to buy a universal remote to replace my pile of remotes. I was skeptical about this one since the price was so low, but I have to say I have been very happily surprised. Easily the most important and useful feature of this is the "learning" feature, which lets you program a command in for a remote that isn't in the default list. It was easy to program, and this made the remote useful even for devices the remote didn't have a preset code for. (I believe this remote was made before Blu Ray players became popular, as there is no code sheet for Blu Ray players.) Still, in short order I was able to set up my remote to work a Sony Bravia tv, Panasonic Blu Ray player, DirecTV HR21, and about a ten year old Kenwood amplifier. Every time I find a command that isn't in the basic settings, I just add it with the learning feature in about 15 seconds (you'll want to keep the old remotes handy for awhile to do this.) The four programmable macros are a nice feature as well, and let you set multiple commands with one button (such as turn on the tv, blu ray player, amp, and then switch the amp input.) Not as essential, but still a nice feature. Knowing what I do now, I would have paid double the price for this remote and still felt good about it.
Customer Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 Stars
Although none of my components were listed in the guide accompanying this remote control, within 15 minutes I "taught" it all of the commands needed to operate my TV. Within 45 minutes, it was operating all three of my components. I have a Viore HDTV, a Memorex upconverting DVD player and DishNetwork satellite service.
You cannot go wrong by buying this unit. Don't waste money on a more expensive one. There are plenty of "extra" buttons to assign to some of the more esoteric functions of any component. For example, I assigned the "Twin View" button to change the aspect ration of my TV, and the "Exit" button to operate the DVD player's drawer.
Also, there are 4 "macro" buttons on the bottom row. You can program a series of commands. I used one to turn on the DVD player, turn on the TV, then open the DVD drawer.
The only negative comment I have is that I wish there were a way to program a "delay" in to those matrix buttons. I'd like to program more commands, but they occur too fast -- the component isn't ready for them yet. If I could delay particular commands, that would be ideal.
Other than that, which is a trivial complaint, this is a super purchase, and you will not regret owning it and using it. You'll love it.
Customer Review: totally painless, highly recommended Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this as a gift for my dad, since the remote he was using for our TV was so old that you had to hit it a few times every time you wanted to change the channel. despite the fact that the old remote was nearing uselessness, he still wasn't too excited about getting a new one, since he expected it would take a lot of work to program it...but, amazingly, all we had to do was put in 2 AA batteries and immediately it was able to control all the basic functions (power, channel, volume, play, etc.) of our TV, DVD player and cable box. I can't guarantee it will work that easily for everyone, but I certainly received a big kiss for purchasing the most painless-to-use remote control my father has ever seen. We did have a little more trouble programming things like the "info" and "on demand" buttons for our Comcast cable box, because the codes supplied by Comcast did not seem to work. After a little searching around on the internet, my dad figured out to go directly to the sony product website, and found that the remote has its own unique set of codes. Once we figured that out, programming was a breeze. I can't comment on the learning function though, since the old universal remote promptly went on strike and wouldn't work even just to program the new one.
