Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony RMVL610B Remote Commander with 3 Color Back Plates - Bright Pack (Black)Customer Review: Does it all, for peanuts Summary: 5 Stars
I had only moderate hope that this remote would be able to replace all our remotes effectively. However after spending about half an hour setting it up, I was able to put all our other remotes in a drawer for good.
All the codes I needed for the normal components were correct on the first try, and mapped very well. I chose this remote over the RM-VL600 because this one has extra navigation buttons that the other doesn't, such as next/prev track, skip forward/back, and page up/down. My hope was that I'd be able to map those to the corresponding functions from the Dish DVR remote. Surprisingly, they all worked just as I'd hoped without any extra work. The code provided mapped them nicely.
Generally, programming is straightforward. To documentation is decent. For any keys you want to customize, the learning process is dead simple and fast: Press Set, choose the component, and then the key to map. Press the button on your old remote, and it's learned. You can continue doing this without exiting the learning mode, so programming a series of keys is fast. I used this process for my Apple remote.
I haven't played with the sequence keys, but I'm looking forward to doing that, so I can turn on/off all the components with one key.
Finally, the remote allows you to specify what device controls your master volume. This way even when you're controlling another device like a dvd player, the volume and mute keys work on the right device. The default setting uses your TV, but in my case, the receiver is the master volume. It was an easy change to make on the remote and it now works as you'd expect.
So, this remote now controls:
- Samsung LN32B460 TV: All functions work with code, except I mapped one extra (zoom mode) to the unused PIP key.
- Apple TV: No code, but I was able to program from the Apple remote without issue. (See note below on up/down keys)
- Dish Network DVR-625: No problems, had the code. All menu navigation is there including page-up/down, play controls, record, etc. I added a key for search, and another for quick access to the DVR menu.
- Older Pioneer receiver: Had code. All functions work such as input switching, etc.
- Toshiba DVD Player: Had code, all functions work
- Old Toshiba VCR: Had code, all functions work
One hint for learning keys (I ran across this (bug? feature?) when programming the AppleTV remote):
If, while learning a key, you just press and release the key on the old remote, the new key may be programmed as a non-repeating signal. This is a problem if you need to be able to hold the key down. For example, on the Apple TV, you hold the up/down buttons to scroll through a long list of artists.
The fix is easy: Instead of releasing the key on the old remote, hold it down for a few seconds, till the new remote blinks at you. The new key will be programmed as a repeating signal instead.
In summary, we're thrilled with this thing, and my only complaint is that I didn't spend the twenty bucks sooner.
Note this review was written for the "N" version, which only differs in backplate colors.
