I have this sony reader and kindle 3G 2nd generation. If an inexpensive e-reader is what you want, then this one is an excellent choice. It doesn't have any extra bells and whistles, which is a plus in my opinion. It performs its basic functions of organizing your collection of books and letting you enjoy it very well. The build quality is very good. The entire shell with the exception of the screen is made of brushed aluminum. Fit and finish are really good as well. The weight and size are perfect, IMHO. I can hold it in one hand and read in bed for hours with no discomfort. The controls are minimalistic. One look at the front panel, you can pretty much figure out what each button does. There is no wifi or other network connection, but both importing a book into the included library software and syncing it to sony reader are very simple and straightforward. There are so many books available online in the epub format (check out Gutenberg). I have already downloaded over a hundred books that I plan to read, all for free. That, in itself, can easily cover the cost of this reader, not to mention the shelf space it saves me. The contrast of the screen is at least equal if not better than the 2nd generation kindle. Only minor complain that I have is there is no charger included, only a USB cable that let you charge the reader from your MAC or PC. I bought a third-party one from ebay for $5. But if you do plan to purchase a lot of ebooks eventually, then Kindle is a better way to go. Not because of the reading device itself, but the service that Amazon provides. Anyway, this Sony reader is the best purchase that I have made in the last two years. It is worth every penny.
