Customer Review: Great, Simple Device Summary: 4 Stars
I received this as a Christmas gift. After looking through so many negative reviews, I almost returned the thing. I've very glad I didn't.
The unit was simple to hook-up, with everything I needed. As clearly indicated, there is no tuner, but as I don't have TV service, I don't need to record anything. When I do, I'll just have to hope it comes with a cable box in order to make use of this feature. Even without recording capability, it's ability to play both DVDs and VHS tapes still makes it a worthwhile unit, especially for the price.
I've had no problems playing either type of media, and have been using it daily for about two weeks. I haven't had any problems with the picture or sound.
The player does have some minor faults. It's a litte slow to load, which I basically expected. It only counts in minutes and hours on the display, no seconds, and doesn't show the chapter numbers either. They would be nice features, but not a big deal for me. The remote has a bit of an overabundance of buttons, a few of which don't work with my TV. In order to use the TV/Video button, you have be in TV mode (a sliding button at the top of the remote), and to use the Enter button you have to be in Video mode, which is a little annoying in switching back and forth, but again, not a big deal. Most of the other buttons work in either mode, although I can't get the numbered channel buttons to work at all, and have to use the Channel tracking button instead. Again, all minor things, and I was a little suprised it worked with my old Zenith TV at all.
So far I've been very pleased with my player, and would recommend to anyone looking for something simple.
Customer Review: Does the job well. Summary: 4 Stars
Ease of use - Easy, hook up and go. One thing I like is that the remote control uses a switch rather than logic buttoms so you know from across the room whether you are trying to control a vcr or dvd. The operations of the rest of the remote controls could be clearer. A big problem I have is that the remote has a LOT of plain buttons that all look they same. In a dim room I usually hand to to somebody else to fast-forward, etc.
Features - exactly what is advertised and expected. No frills.
Picture Quality - Haven't used it on a discriminating system but it looks ok to me.
Sound Quality - Haven't used it on a discriminating system but it sounds ok to me.
I use my machines as basic players. Seems like I remember the manual on this one being a little vague.
One thing I like is that the remote control uses a switch rather than logic buttoms so you know from across the room whether you are trying to control a vcr or dvd. I will probably buy another one.
Bottom line is I think I'll buy another one.
Customer Review: I am pleased Summary: 4 Stars
That folks will review a product at 1 star because there's no tuner when the product listing says, "TUNERLESS"... anyway
I got this for my kids' room. Needed an inexpensive DVD/VCR combo. I set it up last night, and watched a dvd with them, and found that it's quality is above what I expected for the price. The only complaint I have is the image quality when inactive (the sony screen when a dvd isn't playing). It flickers, but not noticeable when it is in play mode. It also could be the TV, as it is old and tired, so I can't say for sure that the unit is to blame.
The rewind feature is great (Flash rewind a whole VHS is 120 seconds) and overall, I am happy. This may not be what you want if you are building a dynamo home theater system, but if you just want to play some movies and get a decent quality out of it, I would recommend this one. The remote is easy, and can be programed to work with most televisions as an alternative to two remotes (not a Samsung, though, so be forewarned if you have a samsung television).
Customer Review: basic but reliable performer Summary: 4 Stars
this unit replaced a broken 6-year old jvc in the kids' room (you can imagine how tragic a breakdown in entertainment is to kids). thus far (2 months) the sony unit has performed well. read times on dvd's is faster than the old jvc, the vhs is relatively noiseless, and picture quality is good overall.
this unit does not have a cable tuner - so you'll have to switch the tv back and forth between sources! this also means that if your tv only has a cable jack / coaxial input you'll be out of luck connecting this unit. the remote is adequate but did not come with codes to control a 14-year old jvc crt (which refuses to die), so now we have to train the kids to use 3 remotes (tivo remote for directv, jvc tv and sony dvd) - if it werent for kids' natural propensity for this stuff, i'd have no hair left.
