Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony SRF-M37V FM/AM/Weather/TV Radio Walkman with 25 Memory Presets

Customer Review: Best or Tied for First at This Price Point
Summary: 5 Stars

As I write this review the Sony SFR is 28.52 on Amazon (I bought mine on Amazon recently for 30 and I've seen it as high as 39). It is a digital radio with over-the-ear headphones (on the cheap side) and manual volume control. The AM is A grade. The FM is B minus as the NPR stations here in LA, 89.3 and 89.9, suffer a little static. Overall build quality is high. The SFR has a clip for my pants. Having said all this, I'm giving the SFR to my wife and I'm keeping my other pocket radio, the Sangean DT 180, which I purchased on Amazon for about 36 dollars. Currently, Amazon is charging 38.51 for it. For me, but not everyone, the Sangean is slightly better when compared to the Sony SFR. Here's the breakdown. AM reception is a tie. FM goes to the Sangean, which gets worse reception than the Sony for 89.3 but no static at all for 89.9. Regarding FM, all pocket radios seem rather weak in this regard since there is no telescopic antenna. The Sangean has no clip but is smaller than the Sony so it can fit inside my pocket. The Sangean doesn't have manual tuning. It has digital toggle feature with numerical increments. I like this feature. The Sangean has ear-canal headphones, which can be dangerous to hearing so be careful. All in all, both radios are almost equal with slight variations in features, which will become a matter of preference. For me, I prefer the Sangean. But currently it is 10 dollars more than the Sony, and I'm not sure it's worth that much more. Either way, you're getting an apex pocket digital radio.

Customer Review: Best Walkman type radio yet!!!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very impressive performer. I received mine as a birthday gift from my brother a few weeks ago and was initially somewhat underwhelmed. I have tried many different variations of "Walkman" type radios over the years and have yet to find one that performed up to my expectations so when I received this I was prepared for another letdown. WRONG!! This thing is hot on all bands with better than average fidelity through the supplied headphones which by the way, I prefer to earbuds which I HATE. There's no place to put them when not in use and they always get tangled up if you try to wad them in your pocket so the conventional headphones work best for me.(I just put them over my neck when not in use). I had been using a Sangean DT-200V as my carrying radio but this Sony has replaced it. The Sony is much smaller and outperforms it to boot. The clock display is a nice feature and I love the presets, so easy to use and program. Plus the local/dx switch actually works,a great aid on FM in congested areas such as Columbus,Ohio. My main interest in radio is AM dx'ing and sports broadcasts(Baseball). No it won't pull them in like my Grundig S-350 or Zenith Transoceanic but it will get the job done better than anything else in it's class, even the Sangean DT-200V which some claim has the best AM reception of any "pocket radio". If your interest in radios are similar to mine,do yourself a favor and get one of these tiny wonders. You won't be dissapointed.

Customer Review: Better than I expected
Summary: 5 Stars

It's a great little radio. I was looking for an AM/FM radio to run with because I found I wasn't running with CD's, the reason I bought a Sony Discman. It's too heavy to run with for just the radio. I wanted a radio with an armband, but after reading the product description and the reviews, I decided to go with this. For $25 plus about $6 for S&H (fyi - this little lightweight product came in a box that could hold 5 or 6 books; and I know it doesn't cost $6 to ship this), I was worried that the belt clip would be too flimsy and the reception not as good as promised. Both exceeded my expectations. Fabulous little gizmo. I don't need any more than the presets provided and the TV channels are a bonus. It only takes one AAA battery, so it truly is lightweight and is so small it doesn't flop around on my waist like my discman does. I'm worried about the battery dying in the middle of a run, but the AAA is small enough to take an extra in my pocket with no problem. I was running with it on a treadmill this morning and easily memorized the buttons so that I didn't have to look down. The volume is a dial, but I haven't had a problem with it increasing/decreasing accidentally. It also has a 'hold,' another bonus convenience for the price. I'm thinking about buying another one in case I lose/break this one; manufacturers are always discontinuing models, and I don't want to be without this great little gadget.

Customer Review: Excellent little radio!
Summary: 5 Stars

In spite of the bad reviews of the Sony SRF-M85V S2, I bought one since it supposedly was a higher-end product than the Sony SRF-M37V. What a mistake. I should've paid attention to all the bad reviews of the S2. It was absolute junk! I can't believe it is even a Sony product.

I then purchased the M37V in hopes that all the glowing reviews here were accurate. They were!

I love the M37V! It pulls in stations with excellent fidelity. There is no discernable hiss or static on all the stations I've tried on AM/FM/TV. It is also a lot easier and more intuitive to operate than the S2.

The only drawback is the big, ugly, over-ear headphones that come with the M37V. Why would Sony package the tiny radio with such huge headphones instead of earbuds? The reason most people buy a tiny radio is because size is of the essence. It should be packaged with earbuds.

I feel compelled to mention that I bought some inexpensive JVC Gumy earbuds (HA-F120-A) for the Sony radio. They only cost $9. I'm compelled to mention it because they are such an outstanding product for so little money. They blow away IPOD earbuds in both sound and comfort. They sound as good or better than earbuds that cost over 5 times more.

The Sony SRF-M37V paired with the JVC Gumy earbuds is an outstanding combination that I highly recommend.

Customer Review: Good One

My son got me this little gem for my birthday last year, mainly because I was admiring his SFR-M37V when he was home visting.

The Radio works very nicely for my walks in the morning on AM or FM. What others say is true though it does not do well on real weak stations on AM during the daytime because of it small internal antenna. I would think this would actually work to advantage in a large metropoliton city though because it would not have as much bleed over from other powerful stations.

At any rate it receiver does work well and in the evening I listen to 1100 on AM in Cleveland from the St. Louis area, and also pick up all the clear station power house stations in New Orleans, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, etc.

Contrar to some reviews here I think this little receiver has excellant sound, so if you get a one that sounds bad send it back for an exchange.

This is a rugged little radio, my son has climb many of the highest 115 mountains in the east with this radio in the winter. He uses it for the weather band.

It seems to do very well on batteries also considering it is a digital radio.

All in all very good radio for the money. I would actually have rated this radio at 4 1/2 stars if possiable.
