Customer Review: Good-sounding but not too durable

Earlier reviews of SONY's MDR-W08 mini-phones describe an in-line volume control. The set I received in January of 2011 doesn't have this extra.
Their one-meter wire is the precise length of the cord on the bright yellow phones that came with a SONY Walkman cassette player I bought a quarter century ago, but there's definite design and function differences. Those old phones were metal and plastic; these are only plastic and weigh less. The wire is now a thinner gauge as well, but not by much.
The old headphone drivers were more disc shaped and always chafed my ears just a little. These new ones are nicely contoured and fit so much better; no discomfort at all.
Audio quality is lusher with these but clearly their response favors low frequencies over high. It's not at all a sacrifice, but if you're looking for phones that will reproduce a dog whistle with no loss of DBs, these aren't for you.
I don't recommend the MDR-W08s for anyone who will be moving around while using them, as the wire probably won't take much tugging before shorting out. However, if as I do, you plan to plug into a DVD player or notebook computer while sitting quietly, they should serve you well.
I'm satisfied with my purchase.

These headphones are far and away the best I have ever had. As a runner, I look for headphones that are lightweight and will stay in place while delivering top quality sound. These definitely deliver. I have had several pairs over the years and have always sought them out. They have carried me through 5 marathons and countless training runs.
Some reviewers have complained about the rough edge that can be on the earpiece. I admit I had one pair that had that problem and it was irritating, but I sanded it down with a nail file and had no further problems. I do buy new ones periodically, as I have just today because the left earpiece cracked and broke today, but bear in mind that I have had and used this pair for the past 4 years. For a $10 headset, I'd say that's pretty good.
As for sound quality, I am very picky about my music. I can't stand muffled sound or sound that has so much bass that the mid and high-range notes are lost. With these headphones, I hear nuances in familiar music that I'd never heard before. If you don't mind the in-the-ear aspect of these headphones, the quality is amazing! I recommend them highly.

I was skeptical that something this inexpensive and small could give me the sound I wanted, with good bass. I'm certainly convinced now. These headphones fit just inside the ear and are so lightweight you can almost forget you have them on. The sound is vibrant with a great range. I wanted headphones that would partly block sound but would also allow me to tell when someone came to my cubicle. These have been perfect for the double usage. They block much of the chatter that goes on, yet allow me to respond immediately when someone addresses me (I courteously remove the headphones first of course). Easy to put on and take off, they're a joy and I always keep a spare one.
A coworker wanted headphones and tried mine, then ordered a pair for herself and loves them just as much. They give privacy while being small enough they don't intimidate people who see you are "plugged in".
The wire that connects to the headphones is very fine and flexible, which is fine, but I've lost a pair or two because something accidentally fell on a wire and damaged it. The inexpensive price means easy replacement.

These headphones tuck away in a pocket, I can whip them out and get them on faster than any other kind.
They are comfortable and low-profile.
I like this version without the volume control as the cord seems to last longer and when I want less sound I just pull them away from my ears a little and they still stay on well.
These headphones have really good cords compared to others I've had. By the time there is a short, they have given me easily enough use to justify the price (which I consider very reasonable).
I like how I can hang them around my neck and don't have ear pads to be concerned about losing or roughing up.
I love these so much, but don't see many people wearing them. So I always keep a stash of new ones to replace any that develop cord problems. I've never had headphones that didn't develop cord problems. These easily last twice as long as others. I hope they stay in production forever, but in case they don't, I have several new unused pair ready to keep me going for years to come.

I love to exercise and I especially love to run. I can't run without good music. I have tried out so many different headphones from really expensive to really cheap. I have tried the buds that fit in the ears. I have tried the headphones that wrap around your ears. I have tried the old-school headphones with the soft earphone piece, but nothing really works well. My ears are too small to hold the buds in. I have even tried the ear buds with the buds and they don't hold well enough while I exercise. The big soft ones feel too hot. So I decided to try out these cheaper, less fancy headphones and they worked like a charm. I have actually bought three different pairs (two for my kids to use with their music). They are adjustable. They fit into my ears and don't fall out when I run or cycle. The sound quality is just fine. I just want to hear music and I want the headphones to stay in/on my ears and these fit the bill. I highly recommend these headphones...especially if you have trouble with the wrap around or buds not fitting or staying in/on your ears properly.
