Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony VCT-R640 Lightweight Tripod for DSCV1/P41/W1/P93/P73/P92/P100/P150/F88/F828 Digital CamerasCustomer Review: The video review makes this look better than it is Summary: 3 Stars
I so wanted to believe this was going to be more than cheap plastic. It looks nice, but the crank like most tripods is way to cheap and will break with not much pressure like most tripods around this price. The legs fully extended make the tripod flimsy. Sun Pak's tripod for the same price may be a better choice than this tripod. For one thing the quick release is not replaceable on this Sony tripod. Most tripods around this price are the same quality and may only have minor differences that don't matter much. There is a huge price gap between a disposable tripod like this one and a good tripod, but hopeful if your careful with a tripod like this it will be fine for a while and do what you need it to do, unless you are seriously making videos/taking pics
Customer Review: travel tripod, can work with your SLRs Summary: 3 Stars
I needed a travel size tripod for my D200 and my Sony point and shoot. I know this is not like those professional type expensive ones.. No. But this is very casual and easy to use. Of course there are lot of restrictions and limited functionality as to the usage. It wont work as a ballhead tripod if you have used one, but this is good for casual travel type requirements. I used it in my trip to Mexico and Italy. Sometimes I found it really not working as I need, but then its only 30 usd vs a 600 usd one.
Customer Review: Works OK Summary: 3 Stars
Can't seem to figure how to keep the camcorder SECURELY on the top. Other than that, it works fine.
Customer Review: Bah. Mostly plastic, and heavier than described. Summary: 2 Stars
When I was shopping for this, one review caught my eye saying this tripod was "mostly metal." That claim, along with the light weight in the description, were the two things that sold me on the model.
Well, NEITHER ARE TRUE. This thing is indeed mostly plastic made to look like black metal. Apparently, this fooled the other reviewer, but not me. The only metal I found on the whole thing were the bars of the legs themselves, and the bar of the swivel handle. Every single other part of this thing is black plastic. All of the hinges and joints are plastic. The leg braces are plastic. The height crank is plastic (yikes!). Even the center tube is PLASTIC. Overall, it looks nice, I'll give them that; but please know that you are NOT getting a "mostly metal" tripod here. No way.
Now, that by itself wouldn't be too bad, except that you'd expect something that's nearly all plastic to be much lighter - it isn't. The part of the description that reads:
Product Dimensions: 22.3 x 5 x 4.9 inches ; 1 pounds
..is WRONG. Maybe this thing weighs 1 pound on the moon, but it's much heavier where I'll be using it, here on earth. It is, indeed, much closer to it's described shipping weight:
Shipping Weight: 4 pounds
Why the large discrepancy? Who know? Sloppiness on Amazon's part, I guess. At any rate, the weight was key for me, and there were several tripods lighter than 4 lbs which I passed up. I guess I should have trusted my instincts when they told me this was too good to be true.
Anyway, if I'm going to buy a plastic tripod, I want it to be much lighter than 4 lbs.
Customer Review: This thing SUCKS!!!!!!!!! Summary: 2 Stars
i got this tripod for christmas thinking it was going to be good because it looks to be but really, looks are deceiving and its not good at all. When ever you move the camera, it makes a sticking noise and is screechy. Im really disappointed with this, the head of it absolutely sucks and it is very shaky. I hope one found this useful.
