Customer Review: Format Error in first 15 minutes

I bought this for my son so that he could put videos on youtube. He never got to use it because within the first 15 minutes of me figuring out how to work the camera, I got a "format error." I was using a SanDisk memory card. I got ahold of Sony tech support and the somewhat rude tech told me that I had to use the Sony brand card. When I told him that I wasn't much interested in buying a $40 memory card to troubleshoot the camera, he offered to do a RMA. Now, this is a SONY product and my opinion of Sony was that these things just didn't happen with their products -- can you imagine an essentialy DOA brand new Sony product? Anyway, I formatted the memory card a bunch and kept getting the error. While I suppose it could be the SanDisk memory card, Sony's website and literature say that any compatible card will work. There's enough other former owners of this product on the web with similar "format errors" that convinced me that its not worth investing another $40 just to prove the product is defective. Its just a poor product that doesn't work right out of the box.
The little that I got to play with it before the error demostrated to me that low level lighting does not work very well with video. The microphone is also too sensitive. For example, using the telephoto button (which is digital by the way) results in a loud noise on the video. It has to just be the button being depressed since it is a digital zoom.

Never again. I will never buy another Sony product again. The TV I bought? Sound goes out for a full minute a couple of times a night. And it's less than 2 years old! Vaio laptop? Sent it back after a week. Doesn't work well with XP even though I had to pay $500 extra for the privilege. Now the Webbie. After the 3rd charge the battery won't charge again. I guess I don't know what's wrong with it. It's a dead piece of metal I know that. Tech support, in Malaysia of course, can't do anything. They want me to send it to them at MY expense! Are you kidding me?! Shoulda got a Mino. I will NEVER buy another Sony product again as long as I live. Promise. No matter how cute the packaging. Save your money, and your sanity. I purchased hoping to take photos of our dogs playing in the snow. After charging the required 300 minutes, Sony still is very slow to respond. After adjusting for a low light setting, there still wasn't sufficient light to take photos or videos. Maybe in Miami in July at high noon I could get a well-lit video. Not mid-morning on a snowy day. Not inside. Oh, and wait a few seconds between making each selection. My old, arthritic dog responds faster to commands. I cannot think of anything that I like about it. Well, it did fit nicely back in the box as I packed to return. I have the Sony Webbie Pm1 and the Creative Vado pocket HD camaras. (both purchased from amazon) You will be very disappointed with the picture quality on the Webbie, it is very jittery and not crisp at all and not to mention the sound, I mean "horrible" any wind or hand touching noise will interrupt the sound completly. And dont even think of using the Webbie indoors, it will look like video shot with a cell phone. On the other hand the Vado is a sheer beauty, great picture quality and pretty good sound. Thank goodness I didn't sell the Vado. Considering Sony is the king of video this is quite a surprise. Don't buy this camara.Customer Review: Is there a 0 star rating?

That's what I would give it. Huge waste of money. If you want poor quality photos and poor quality video, this is the product for you. Shame on Sony!!!
