I have had my Sony now for over a month. I am a serious audio nut and have had a separate high quality Onkyo tuner since 1980. (It finally died. My unit was tweaked with superior internal wire, caps and aligned) I did/do extensive research (see commentary below) before buying. I was really going to go the Sirius/XM route but like others the monthly bill is not desirable even though the content is great. And I always liked FM. This way of listening is only as good as your local programming though - even with a sensitive tuner. Fortunately, here in Tampa Bay area (FL) we do have a wide variety of stations and almost ALL stations, AM or FM, have the HD capability. (I looked on iBiquity's site - they are the licensee - they list all stations in your area with HD capability). Saw the price and said "How can you not try it?"
The sound quality is the best I have ever heard. Quantum leap over the Onkyo - which was NO slouch. The AM HD simply is superb - I can't believe how good it is. What really got me interested in the Sony (I don't care for Sony - usually overpriced and POOR customer service as a norm) was a review by a FM Tuner alignment Technician. This guy regularly upgrades and modifies vintage tuners. Repeatedly he mentioned to his readers that the measurements he was taking off the Sony were NOT MISTAKES. The normal FM specifications are so superior that he/forum had never seen ANY tuner turn those #s in on regular FM reception alone. The HD stations, of course are even quieter and more noise free. And now you get all those others that go with the main call signal. Excellent.
If you live in the sticks - Sirius/XM is great way to go. Lucky for me, I have a great PBS station (classical, jazz at night) and the model community radio station in The Nation > WMNF Tampa, FL > transmitter is 30 miles away! [that distance can be a problem for any analog tuner - NOISE!] (jazz, blues, 60's, 70s progressive, techno, reggae - all formatted shows in HD. 30 miles away - used to be a bit noisy but listenable on the Onkyo. Now I hear it in HD and it is superb. Even with the cheesy wire antennae supplied! I was going to buy an antennae upgrade but I simply do not need it.
The Sony is THE BEST VALUE I have ever bought for a hi-fi component in 31 years of owning gear. Go get one.
2 minuses? It does not come with RCA cables for hook up. I provided excellent Straightwire Rhaposdy cables - 1988 vintage - so I do have a bit of a hot rodded set up as compared to Radio Shack $6 cables. (some people can not hear a difference - go buy the $6 ones) Also, yeah the light stays on - I dim mine to the lowest setting. That is it for me (running hot complaints from others is a non-issue for me - I have a well ventilated rack shelf for it) and to me very minor at most. Can you believe it? Happy listening!
