Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio TunerCustomer Review: What audio tuners should have been all along! Summary: 5 Stars
The Sony HD Tuner is an outstanding piece of audio tech. This is what radio was meant to sound like.
Most people think HD radio is something new, like High Def tv. but it isn't. The technology for it has been around since then late 60's.
But radio stations wouldn't use it because it required a complete overhaul of their transmitting systems. Plus it is much cheaper to broadcast in analog
that in digital. And as one reviewer stated."Analog broadcasting hides a lot of flaws in the broadcast system. That HD broadcasting brings out.
With that said, I would recommend buying the Sony HD Tuner. and pair with one of the Pyle mini amps that have their own source inputs, and a good pair of
mini speakers such as from Sony or KLH.
By the way, a word to Sony. When will you be putting these great tuners into your stereo systems.
Customer Review: HD Radio is Great! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this product because my Classical Radio station went digital and moved the standard FM Stereo broadcast to a weaker station that comes in poorly or not at all at my location. I connected the Sony HD Tuner to the cable for my external roof antenna and to my receiver VCR inputs, scanned for HD stations, and located my station. It has worked very well and the HD sound quality is excellent. It gave me back my classical station :-) - with even better sound. I haven't used the standard FM or AM functions. My only complaint is that I would prefer that off was "off" instead of standby - that is, that it consumes electricity when not in use. I also tried a COBY HDR-650 unit for a second location, but it lacks a connection for an external antenna and so I had to return it as it was unable to locate my HD station - the Sony model is a better product!
Customer Review: Great value for a tuner Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this tuner to replace a 1980 Luxman 240T (one of the original digital tuners) paired with a Luxman L-530 Integrated amp. The original Luxman was ok but gave a fair amount of background noise on marginal stations and the sound was fairly flat even on good stations. The Sony XDRF1HD was a dramatic improvement. I was skeptical based on all the reviews but for $83.00 including shipping I really believe this is a hi-fi value that is tough to beat. The reception is excellent but the power, depth and soundstaging of the music is what I was so surprised about. I really didn't know FM could sound this good. The HD stations are even better. High priced analog tuners may be better in some respects but for the price you probably can't touch this unit. If you live near a city where HD radio is more prominent this is a real winner.
Customer Review: Stellar Sony tuner Summary: 5 Stars
This is one amazing tuner. The performance on regular FM is on a par with the most expensive tuners. Superb sensitivity and selectivity. The Sony locks on to the digital carrier quickly, and displays the transmitted call sign, etc. on its bright LCD screen. More on that later. The AM performance is excellent, although a bit narrow-band for my tastes.
What's not as stellar? The bright LCD screen does not dim when the power is off, the tuner 'forgets' its presets if there is a power interruption of some length, it runs hot, and the supplied FM dipole is too long by about 6". Minor stuff, and if you know what you are doing, correctable.
I am in the broadcasting industry and would seriously consider using this tuner in critical applications. It's that good!
Oh... It has a decent manual and a good remote control, too.
Customer Review: SONY HYBRID DIGITAL COMPONENT FM TUNER WORKS! Summary: 5 Stars
Our public radio station (WGCU/Fort Myers, FL) recently went "ALL TALK" all the time. Yuk. Classical music was shunted onto one of two HD channels, and the WGCU website touted a table top HD radio or a whole new Sangean component receiver system for those who wanted the classical program stream. Or, we were referred to our local electronics stores.
While the sales reps at Radio Shack and Circuit City were aware of HD radio, not much was available for purchase.
I turned up this Sony unit online and I am delighted with its performance. You do have to attach another antenna, but I just tacked the one they supplied to the wall, and I was off and running.
Cost about $86 delivered. Delivery is fast, and installation is easy--just plug into the aux/dvd input on your amplifier.
