Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio TunerCustomer Review: Top-notch tuner, just give it ventilation Summary: 5 Stars
I agree with all the reviews praising this little gem, both here and online (google it). I live in San Francisco, and it pulls in all the stations crystal clear, and even the jazz station that my Onkyo 705 tuner had trouble with. I found that the problem of overheating folks talk about is related to the small feet Sony puts on it. When I first got it, I noticed the bottom was getting much warmer than the top, so I simply raised it a 1/4" off the shelf, and now even after it's been on for an hour - it barely gets warm. I can rest my hand on the top rear panel with no discomfort. The bottom panel has vent holes, so Sony knew that was a heat source. They just didn't put sufficient-size feet under it. Also, make sure there's enough overhead room in your cabinet. I don't think you'll find a better HD tuner out there.
Customer Review: Great product, great price Summary: 5 Stars
I just purchased and installed this new tuner. I love it. I was getting very poor AM and FM reception with my stereo receiver and I wanted to see what HD radio was like. Installation was super easy and quick. The hardest part was setting the clock which wasn't that hard. Performance: I was very impressed with the tuner's ability to grab all of the HD station in my area (Portland, OR) - the sound is very good in HD. Secondly, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much better the non-HD stations come in. I am using a pretty good NAD receiver and this little Sony tuner just blows it away with the same supplied AM and FM antennas. For $80, this is an absolute steal and the cheapest upgrade to your stereo system. I'm considering getting another one for my garage radio. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
Customer Review: Great xmas present Summary: 5 Stars
Got this for xmas. Seems to do exactly what it says. Has a very good tuner and the sound whether HD or analog seems a lot cleaner . Not sure what the issue is with some reviewers saying its hot even off. Mine is not even lukewarm when turned off . It gets a little warmer when on though i haven't had it on extended periods yet . For the price less then $85 its a good value . Its nice to get some extra stations and some are even worth listening to . Worth the money and all the functions work as advertised. Seems to be more sensitive than the Onkyo receiver in the amp itself. The only real stupid thing with it is when you hit the off button the backlighting stays on , don't know what brilliant design engineer thought that one up . It's a waste of power and will probably burn out the bulbs in a few years.
Customer Review: Quality Product Summary: 5 Stars
The tuner senstivity is excellent. I live about 35 miles from Chicago but still pull in more stations than when I lived 10 miles from Chicago with my technics reciever tuner.
An other review indicated the tuner gets very hot, apparently this has been fixed; I don't have that problem.
Most Chicago stations are HD, and they sound drastically better than analogue FM. There are of course differences between how stations compress the signal prior to broadcast. The more compressed stations sound compressed (worse, muddy sounding). The term near CD quality must be a marketing term (a lie). I would say the stations I here sound midway in between FM and CD quality.
The display is a little small if you are more than 6 feet away.
Overall this is an outstanding tuner.
Customer Review: Sony HD Radio Summary: 5 Stars
The XDRF1HD radio is compact but packed with all the necessary features. Has a stronger station tuner than my older stereo tuner. If HD signal is weak, it will automatically switch to standard analog signal. I have it hooked up to indoor amplified "rabbit ears" and is more than adequate except for fringe stations, but if hooked up to outdoor antenna, you should pickup all available stations. Can program up to 20 AM and 20 FM stations. Comes with a remote that you can access all the features. Display has three intensity levels and adjustable contrast. The unit does run warm, and heard of this before purchasing, but as long as you have installed so that there is adequate air flow over the radio, this should not be an issue. I believe that this model will more than satisfy your crave to enter the HD radio era.
