Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner

Customer Review: very good tuner
Summary: 5 Stars

Very good tuner, for the cost the XDRF1HD HD tuner has unbelievably good reception and sound quality. Comparing against my other SONY tuner costing 3+ times more. The XDRF1HD tuner is by far a much better device.
Dislikes:
Only 20 presets for FM, & 20 presets for AM, for rural locations this might not be an issue.
Direct numerical entry of stations not possible.
No output level adjustment.
Signal strength meter resolution could be better.
A radio version might be nice to see.
Should the above ever be addressed I would not have any issues paying a higher premium to have these feature.
Even though I have a few negative comments, I own 2 of the XDRF1HD 1 for work and 1 for home.
I highly recommend owning and using the XDRF1HD tuner.

Customer Review: Affordable HD Tuner
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this unit because I have been wanting to try HD radio, because I trust the Sony name and because the price with shipping was under $100. The unit did not disappoint--it is easy to set up and use and has a very nice sound, limited only by the quality of the amplifier/speakers you use. Reception of regular FM was excellent. Reception of digital channels seems very good (I have no standard to compare it with)though if I stand in a certain place in the room it cuts out.

One thing to be aware of--the LCD display has to break in for a few days before it shows all of the information consistently. For the first few days I had the unit the display would drop some letters (restored by turning the unit off and on again)but after that there has been no problem.

Customer Review: HD (Hybrid Digital) Tuner
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great little tuner that performs very well, and is relatively inexpensive! I live in a townhouse building that faces perpendicular to the 20 mile distant signal source so I have a lot of signal interference, but it still pulls in better than anything else that I have for the FM signal.

It has replaced the tuner in my Adcom Pre-amp since it finally has given up after 15 years. One must be aware that this is only a tuner, and needs a Receiver, or another Pre-Amp or Amplifier to plug into.

As others have indicated, it does get warm, but nothing to be alarmed about. If you have not experienced HD (Hybrid Digital) radio, this is a great economical tuner to start with to expand your listening choices, that also performs well.

Customer Review: Sceptic turned advocate
Summary: 5 Stars

I knew next to nothing about HD radio but my favorite radio station was bought out and the new owners completely changed the format. We had this radio station on nearly exclusively for several decades. A NPR radio station took over the format in HD, so I was compelled. I ordered the Sony XDRF1HD HD Radio Tuner hoping for the best. It was very easy to set up, I found my NPR station quite quickly, and the reception is excellent with just the included FM antenna and I am twenty five miles from the station. I have been quite pleased with the NPR station and equally pleased thus far with the Sony HD tuner. The price of entry was also quite reasonable.

Customer Review: "Surroundophile" is wrong.
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't understand the first sentence of John Thomas' review. What's hybrid about this tuner is that it defaults to plain vanilla FM if the HD signal is unstable or absent. It's not a straight HD tuner (no signal - no sound), the way the first generation of HD tuners were - it's a hybrid, digital/analog HD tuner, and I assure you that if get enough signal, you'll get beautiful, soaring, CD quality sound through your stereo. It sounds brilliant, it's inexpensive, and it performs exactly as well as my first HD tuner, which cost three times as much. Don't hesitate. Some of the negative reviewers seem seem not to understand that a decent antenna is important - just go to the trouble, and hook up the supplied antenna. It just doesn't work without it.
